USD FOWLER SCHOOLS - Mourns Tragic Loss of Two Elementary Students, Announces Support Services

FOWLER, KS – May 7, 2025 – It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the tragic loss of two of our beloved elementary students, Travis and Hunter Welch, earlier today in a car accident. Our entire school district community is grieving this devastating news, and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of these precious children during this incredibly difficult time.

The loss of young lives is a profound tragedy that impacts us all. Tomorrow, and in the coming days, USD 225 Fowler Schools will be providing comprehensive support services for our students and staff as they process this heartbreaking event.

Support Services Available Thursday, May 8, 2025:

  • Crisis Counseling Teams: We will have additional counselors, school psychologists, pastors, and social workers on site, as well as representatives from Compass and Hospice. These professionals are trained in grief counseling and crisis intervention.

  • Safe Spaces: Designated quiet rooms will be available at our schools for students and staff who need a calm and supportive environment to talk, reflect, or simply be.

  • Staff Support: We recognize that our teachers and staff are also deeply affected. Support will be available specifically for them, including opportunities for debriefing and access to counseling services.

  • Age-Appropriate Information: School staff will be equipped with guidance on how to discuss this tragedy in an age-appropriate and sensitive manner with students in classrooms.

  • Parent Resources: We will be sharing resources with parents on how to talk to their children about grief and loss, and how to recognize signs that their child may need additional support. This information will be available on our district website and sent home with students.

We understand that the grieving process is unique for each individual, and we are committed to providing ongoing support for as long as it is needed. We encourage parents to talk with their children and to reach out to their child's school if they have any concerns or feel their child needs additional assistance.

Our school community is strong, and in times of unimaginable loss, we come together to support one another. We ask for your compassion and support for the families directly impacted and for our entire school community as we navigate this sorrowful time.

We will share further information regarding any community vigils or memorials as details become available, in accordance with the wishes of the family.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Corri McDowell
