USD #225 Board of Education Meeting

November 9, 2020, 7:00 P.M.  

 

 

Call to order:  T.J. Milford, Board President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. 

Members present: Fred Boyd, Ed Rarden, Kimberly Copenhaver, Cathy Heinz, Jared Weber, Tom Huelskamp, and T.J. Milford were present. Others present were Cherie Nicholson, Superintendent, Corri McDowell, Principal, and Erica Littlewood, Board Clerk.

Recognition of Visitors/Communication: Jennifer Faurot, Morgan Durbin, Emily Dizmang, Bryan Branstine, and Cord Moss.

Approve Consent Agenda: Boyd moved, seconded by Huelskamp to approve the Consent Agenda.  Motion carried 6-0. (Copenhaver was on screen, no audio)

           

DISCUSSION

Interest in Powerlifting: Faurot lead a discussion on the interest in adding Powerlifting as a sport in Fowler this year. Rarden moved, seconded by Weber to accept powerlifting as a sport for the 2020-2021 school year. Motion carried: 7-0.

 

Fall sports updates & basketball information: McDowell updated the board on the conclusion of fall sports and the successes the season brought. Discussed were cross country and football. Updates were also provided for scholars’ bowl, basketball protocols with COVID-19, and concessions. Discussion only, no motion needed.

 

Holiday information/Schedules: McDowell advised the staff Christmas Party will be on December 17, 2020, and the possible variations to the annual Christmas Festival. Discussion only, no motion needed.

 

Entry fees to sporting events: Rarden moved, seconded by Copenhaver to charge visitors $5 adults/$4 students admission to all high school basketball games. Locals living in Fowler or have a student enrolled in the district can attend basketball games at no charge. Motion carried 7-0.

 

Suburban repair: Milford moved, seconded by Weber to have transmission repairs completed by Leepers in Garden City as presented. Motion carried 7-0.

 

Old watering pipe system: Huelskmap moved, seconded by Copenhaver to dispose/get rid of the old irrigation system in the best way possible. Motion carried 7-0.

 

Inclement weather: Rarden moved, seconded by Huelskamp to add three additional days built into the school calendar, if needed, for inclement weather. Motion carried 7-0.

 

 

 

REPORTS

 

Economic Development: Milford gave his report.

Special Ed Co-Op: Copenhaver gave her report.

Data Updates: McDowell gave her report.

Principal Update: McDowell gave her report.

Update on the now cancelled Washington DC trip.

Superintendent Update: Nicholson gave her report.

Safety deposit box – the district has gained access; provided update on contents.

Audit – fiscal and KSDE audit updates.

Math teacher – currently searching for a math teacher for 2021-2022 SY.

COVID-19 update – update on COVID cases and quarantines.

Copiers – leasing new machines with a service contract. 

 

 

PERSONNEL

 

Christmas bonus: Huelskamp moved, seconded by Copenhaver to approve a staff Christmas bonus. Motion carried 7-0.

 

Powerlifting sponsor: Weber moved, seconded by Milford to approve Cord Moss as the powerlifting sponsor for the 2020-2021 SY. Motion carried 7-0.

 

 

EXECUTIVE SESSION

Boyd moved, seconded by Weber to go into executive session for 15 minutes to discuss non-elected personnel under KOMA, board and superintendent. This session is required to protect the privacy interests of the individual(s) to be discussed. Motion carried 7-0. 8:19 p.m.

Milford moved, seconded by Heinz to go into executive session for 10 minutes. Motion carried 7-0. 8:35 p.m.

Adjournment:  A motion was made by Copenhaver, seconded by Huelskamp to adjourn the meeting.  Motion carried 7-0.  Time: 8:50 p.m.
